EVERYONE`S BETTING on notebooks now. Not that desktops have been abandoned. Notebook sales have been picking up and is heading to the same sales volumes as desktops. Riding this new demand wave, chip-makers are on an overdrive - providing the same features that a desktop offers and offering a slew of added advantages which makes them more attractive. There`s been a lot of excitement on AMD`s Puma, for instance, which was launched in Taipei early this month. For all the flutter that it has generated, it is the home users and gamers who are the going to benefit the most from this platform.
Puma is a platform exclusively for notebooks and mobile internet devices (MIDs). The combination of four chips that it offers, currently being tested out on 100 new designs, is likely to revolutionalise the gaming scenario - at least till rival Intel brings out something more challenging. Describing its features, Vamsi Krishna, senior technical manager at AMD, says: `No one ever dreamt of playing games like `Crisis` on notebooks. For serious gamers, there is the ATI Radeon HD graphics chip, which enhances the lighting quality, ensures higher precision and smooth and realistic textures.` `This is an optional chip,` he says. The platform has a chip for the not-so-serious gamers as well. `But if gamers would like to have high frame rate, better resolution, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD graphic chip is a good option. The advantage here is that the system already has a chip for regular gamers. If you add the additional graphic chip to it, it enhances the performance 1.7 times the regular chip,` explains Vamsi. The result is that it increases the scalability in 3D graphics performance. The package for home users is exciting with its high definition quality, better 3D capabilities and terrific download speeds.
Talking of the high definition features, Vamsi says: `Puma offers high definition quality through its ATI Aviva HD technology. This ensures maximum clarity, sharp images and vibrant colours.` `If you have a HD Sony camera, you can download the video on to your notebook and watch it,` he says. Taking a step further, you can even edit photos on screen. `This is something that was not possible before because the screens could not sustain HD videos earlier,` explains Vamsi. Compared to what Intel is offering at present, AMD claims that Puma has five times its HD capability. Talking of high definition movies, you can see blue ray tracks on the Puma platform.
Perhaps the most revolutionary feature that it offers is the enhanced 3D capability which are needed for today`s graphically intensive operating systems and applications. Vamsi says: `Google Earth which is very graphic intensive, can be accessed with greater clarity and precision on notebooks. Puma has a 3D accelerator which enhances the performance three-fold. Intel is yet to launch a Puma-equivalent for this feature.` As for speed, `while an Intel chip would take 14 minutes to download 80 songs, Puma would take just 8. While an Intel chip would require 18 minutes to download five home videos, Puma takes 10 minutes,` says Vamsi. This is possible with Puma`s Wifi-certified 802.11n chips which provides better bandwidth, throughput and ensures low power consumption. Concurring with the green IT theme, its ATI powerXpress technology helps increase the battery life of the MIDs.
It enhances the battery life by tracking only the operations which require power and cutting off supply from the rest. It has a dual dynamic core technology where power is provided only to the required functions. It gets switched off after that. Puma is a combination of four chips - the Turion X2 ultra, AMD 7 series chipsets, the ATI Radeon premium graphics and the ATI powerXpress. The trial runs are on. Says Vamsi, `When compared to 2005, when AMD chips were used only in 45 designs, it is now being used in over 100 designs.`
