The Western world was very different after the fall of the Roman Empire. Without Rome’s engineers, planners, and armies, cities faded into the background. Between 500 and 1400 CE, few places in Europe had populations that were greater than a fifth of the size of Rome at its peak. To our modern eyes, most medieval cities would seem like rural towns surrounded by a protective wall.1 Houses were clustered in tight rows to protect city dwellers from the winter cold. The attached houses created the familiar narrow streets and town squares of old Europe, but hidden behind their facades were spacious backyards, where city dwellers grew food and tended livestock. Orchards, pastures, and a scattering of open fields were common sights within medieval cities. And the rural countryside started just outside of the walls, with plenty of open space for farming, which was the main occupation of most of the city’s residents.
To address the need for larger quantities of clean drinking water, cities turned to water importation—and when it came time to build drinking water systems, Europe looked to the clergy for guidance. (Much of the Romans’ knowledge about engineering and architecture had migrated to the church after the fall of the Roman Empire.) During the early medieval period, the monks who were responsible for building the church’s ever-growing network of monasteries and convents developed their own approach to gravity-powered imported water supplies. Undoubtedly, the works of their Roman predecessors had informed their efforts. Monks learned about plumbing and water system construction by visiting those Roman aqueducts and pipe systems that had remained in service after the fall of the empire. They could also acquire practical knowledge about water engineering by reading Vitruvius’s treatise on the construction and operation of water systems—a book that was a common feature of many a well-stocked monastic library.9
